Lead Scoring: How to Stop Sales From Chasing the Wrong Leads
A sales team spending most of its time on leads that were never going to close is one of the most common, most fixable inefficiencies we see. Lead scoring exists to solve exactly this, and it gets under-built more often than over-built — most teams either skip it entirely or implement a version too crude to actually change behavior.
What actually predicts a lead worth chasing
- Firmographic fit — company size, industry, and other attributes that correlate with your actual best customers, not a generic "looks like a real company" filter.
- Behavioral signals — specific actions that historically correlate with closing, like requesting a demo versus just downloading a generic guide.
- Engagement recency and depth — a lead who engaged once, months ago, is a different opportunity than one actively engaging this week.
- Explicit stated intent, when available — a direct question about pricing or timeline is a stronger signal than any behavioral proxy for it.
Why this belongs in the CRM, not a separate spreadsheet
Lead scoring only changes behavior if sales sees it exactly where they're already working, which is why it belongs inside the CRM setup itself rather than a report someone has to remember to check separately.
Pull your last twenty closed deals and twenty lost ones, and check whether your current scoring — if you have any — would have actually ranked the closed ones higher. If it wouldn't have, the scoring isn't doing its job yet.
This is a genuinely good fit for narrow, well-scoped automation once you have enough historical data to calibrate against — but even a simple, manually-defined scoring rubric beats no scoring at all, and it's worth starting there.
