Reviews and Ratings: What Stops Them From Becoming Spam
A reviews feature sounds simple to build and quickly becomes a moderation problem the moment real traffic hits it — fake five-star reviews from sellers gaming their own listings, coordinated one-star attacks from competitors, and the ordinary spam that finds any open text field on the internet.
What actually needs to be designed in from the start
- Verified purchase requirements — tying a review to an actual transaction removes most of the incentive for fake reviews in one move.
- Rate limiting on review submission, so one account or IP can't flood a listing in a short window.
- A moderation queue for flagged content, with clear criteria for what actually gets removed versus what's just a negative but legitimate opinion.
- Detection for suspiciously similar review patterns, which is exactly the kind of well-scoped pattern-recognition task an AI agent handles reliably, flagging for human review rather than auto-deleting.
Why this matters more on a marketplace
The moment multiple sellers are involved, as we described in multi-vendor marketplaces, review integrity becomes core to trust in the platform itself, not just one seller's reputation — a marketplace with an obviously gameable review system loses buyer trust in every seller on it, not just the one gaming it.
A reviews feature without moderation isn't a trust signal. It's an unmonitored public text field that happens to display star ratings.
We build moderation into the review system from day one now, even for a small launch — retrofitting it after the first coordinated fake-review incident is a much worse position to fix from.
