Voice Search and Conversational Interfaces: Hype vs What's Actually Used
Voice search and conversational interfaces get pitched in almost every yearly "what's next" roundup, and the gap between the predicted adoption and what we actually see in client analytics has stayed wide for a long time — worth separating the genuine, narrow use cases from the broader hype.
Where voice genuinely gets used
- Simple, hands-busy or eyes-busy situations — checking a timer while cooking, adjusting music while driving — where voice is faster than reaching for a screen.
- Basic factual queries through existing voice assistants, which mostly benefit businesses through structured content and local search presence, not a custom voice app.
- Accessibility use cases, where voice input genuinely removes a real barrier for users who have difficulty with a traditional interface.
Where the hype outpaces actual usage
Custom branded voice apps and skills for smart speakers have consistently underperformed the attention they got in press coverage — discoverability is poor, and most users default back to a screen the moment one's available. This is the same pattern we described in adding AI without a clear strategy: a capability in search of a problem, rather than a problem that specifically needs it.
What we actually recommend instead
For most businesses, the better investment is making existing content genuinely well-structured for voice assistants to read aloud when asked — accurate business hours, clear structured data, answerable FAQ content — rather than building a dedicated voice application few people will ever open.
The question isn't whether voice technology works. It's whether your specific customers are actually reaching for it for your specific use case, and for most businesses, the honest answer today is still no.
This is worth revisiting periodically as the technology and usage patterns shift, using the same discipline behind any narrowly-scoped AI decision — build for the use case you can actually observe, not the one that sounds impressive in a pitch.

Why 'Add AI to Our Product' Is Not a Strategy
A strategy names the specific problem AI solves, for whom, and how you'll know it worked. 'Add AI' names none of those things.
