Biometric Authentication: When Face ID and Fingerprint Login Are Worth Building
Biometric login gets requested for almost every mobile app project now, usually as a convenience feature rather than a security one — and that distinction matters, because biometrics solve a specific problem well and aren't automatically an upgrade over what you already have.
What biometric auth actually solves
It removes the friction of typing a password on a small screen, for a returning user on their own device. It's genuinely excellent for that specific case, and it's worth being clear that it's a convenience layer on top of existing authentication, not a replacement for it — the underlying account still needs a real password or equivalent for account recovery and new-device logins.
Where it adds real value
- Frequent, repeat logins — an app people open multiple times a day benefits enormously from removing that friction each time.
- Sensitive actions within an already-logged-in session — confirming a payment or a sensitive change, adding a lightweight extra check without a full re-login.
- Reducing the appeal of weak passwords, since users are less tempted to choose something guessable when they rarely have to type it.
Where it's not the priority it seems
For a low-frequency app, or one where account recovery and cross-device access matter more than daily convenience, the engineering effort is often better spent elsewhere — this is the same cost-benefit thinking behind prioritizing two-factor authentication on the accounts that actually matter most first.
Biometric login makes a good authentication system more convenient. It doesn't make a weak one secure.
We build it as an enhancement layered onto solid underlying authentication, not as a shortcut past building that foundation properly in the first place.

"We need an app" is often really "we need our website to work well on phones." Those are two very different projects with very different price tags.
