Two-Factor Everything: A Simple Habit That Stops Most Account Takeovers
Almost every account compromise we've helped clean up after traces back to the same root cause: a password that was reused somewhere else, guessed, or leaked in an unrelated breach, with no second layer of protection to stop the login even once the password was known. Two-factor authentication is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort security habits available, and it's still turned off far more often than it's turned on.
Why passwords alone stop working
Passwords get reused across services, get phished through convincing fake login pages, and leak in breaches that have nothing to do with the account being attacked. Once an attacker has a working password, a login with no second check is wide open — this is exactly the kind of unlocked door we describe in website security basics.
Where to turn it on first, if you can't do it everywhere at once
- Anything that controls money — payment processors, banking, billing platforms.
- Your domain registrar and DNS provider, since control of these can redirect your entire website or email.
- Cloud hosting and infrastructure accounts, where a compromise can expose customer data directly.
- Any account with admin access to your CMS or codebase.
The excuse we hear most, and why it doesn't hold up
"It's an extra step and it's annoying" is true and also a much smaller cost than a compromised account. A few extra seconds at login is a reasonable trade for closing off the most common way accounts actually get taken over.
A strong password with no second factor is a strong lock on a door that's still propped open.
If you haven't audited which of your business accounts have two-factor authentication turned on, that's a fifteen-minute task worth doing this week, before it becomes an incident worth much more than fifteen minutes to clean up.
