GraphQL vs REST: Picking the Right API Style
GraphQL gets pitched as a strict upgrade over REST in a lot of technical conversations, and the honest picture is more situational — each one solves a different shape of problem well, and picking based on which one is more talked about this year is the same trap as any other stack decision driven by hype rather than requirements.
What REST is still genuinely good at
Simple, resource-oriented APIs with predictable, well-understood caching behavior — REST's simplicity is a real feature, not a limitation, for a large share of applications that don't have complex, varied data-fetching needs across many different client screens.
Where GraphQL earns its added complexity
- A mobile app and a web app both consuming the same API with very different data needs per screen, where GraphQL lets each client request exactly what it needs instead of over-fetching or under-fetching.
- Deeply nested, relational data where a REST equivalent would require multiple round trips to assemble what a single GraphQL query can fetch at once.
- A team building genuinely complex, evolving client interfaces where the flexibility to fetch exactly the right shape of data, without backend changes for every new client need, offers real ongoing value.
The cost GraphQL adds that's easy to underestimate
Caching gets meaningfully more complex than REST's straightforward HTTP caching, and the tooling and query optimization skills required are a real learning curve for a team that hasn't used it before — the same requirements-first evaluation behind any tech stack decision applies directly here.
GraphQL solves a specific over-fetching and under-fetching problem extremely well. If you don't have that problem yet, you're paying its complexity cost for a benefit you're not using.
For most of the API integration work we do, REST remains the simpler, sufficient default — GraphQL earns its place on the specific projects where multiple very different clients genuinely need that flexibility.

Every year has a stack everyone's excited about on social media. Almost none of that excitement should factor into what you actually pick for a client's business.
