Single Sign-On for B2B Customers: When to Build It and When to Wait
"Our biggest prospect says they need SSO" is a sentence that shows up right as a B2B product starts closing larger deals, and it's worth treating as a real, specific requirement rather than a generic feature request — SSO means different things to different enterprise buyers, and building the wrong version wastes real engineering time.
Why this isn't a simple login feature
Enterprise SSO usually means supporting SAML or OIDC against whatever identity provider the customer already uses — Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace — each with its own configuration quirks. It's closer to an API integration than a login form: connective tissue between two systems that were never designed with each other in mind.
When it's worth building
- You have an actual signed or near-signed deal blocked specifically on this requirement, not a hypothetical future enterprise customer.
- Multiple prospects in your pipeline are asking for the same thing, suggesting it's a real pattern, not one customer's unusual requirement.
- You're ready to support the ongoing maintenance burden — each new customer's identity provider can surface its own configuration edge cases.
When to wait
If it's a nice-to-have mentioned once, in passing, by a prospect who hasn't otherwise committed, it's rarely worth diverting real engineering time before the deal is actually real. This is the same discipline behind not over-building for a hypothetical need.
Build SSO for the customer in front of you, not the enterprise logo you're hoping to land eventually. The requirement gets much clearer once there's real money attached.
When we do build this, we scope it around the specific identity providers your actual pipeline needs first, and expand from there — not a generic "SSO support" built against every possible provider before a single customer has used it.
