Subscription Billing: The Edge Cases That Break Recurring Payments
A one-time payment is a single event. A subscription is a relationship that has to keep working correctly for months or years, through plan changes, failed cards, and cancellations that don't always mean what they sound like. Most of the subscription billing bugs we've fixed for clients weren't in the initial charge — they were in everything that happens after it.
The edge cases that actually cause support tickets
- A card that expires or gets declined mid-cycle — does access get cut immediately, after a grace period, or after a retry sequence, and does the customer get told clearly what's happening?
- Plan changes mid-cycle — does the customer get charged the difference immediately, credited, or does the change wait for the next billing date, and is that consistent across every plan combination?
- Cancellation timing — does "cancel" mean immediately, or at the end of the paid period, and is that the same expectation the customer has?
- Proration on upgrades and downgrades, which sounds like simple math and reliably isn't once multiple currencies or discount codes are involved.
Why this deserves the same rigor as a one-time checkout
These edge cases directly determine how much revenue you keep and how many support tickets you generate. The same discipline we described in payment gateway integration — testing failure states deliberately, not just the happy path — applies here, arguably more, because a subscription runs through these states repeatedly, indefinitely.
Simulate a card decline on an active subscriber, then a plan downgrade, then a cancellation, in sequence. If any of those leaves the customer confused about their access or their bill, that's a support ticket waiting to happen at scale.
Getting this right upfront is far cheaper than patching it after a hundred subscribers have already hit the edge case nobody tested for.

Integrating Payment Gateways: What Breaks and Why
Every payment gateway's docs make integration look like an afternoon's work. The afternoon's work is the easy 80%. The other 20% is where real projects slip.
